American Lung Association of Hawaii : Tobacco
Lung HelpLine: 1-800-LUNG-USA (586-4872)
Tobacco has a huge impact on Hawai`i’s health and economy. Tobacco is the most preventable cause of premature death and disease. Each year, smoking kills more people than AIDS, murders, suicides, alcohol and drug abuse, car accidents, and fires combined. Annually in Hawaii, approximately 1,100 deaths (16% of resident deaths) are due to tobacco use. One out of three teen smokers results in premature death. Up to 300,000 children suffer from respiratory tract infections because of exposure to secondhand smoke. Tobacco contributes to emphysema, cancer, chronic bronchitis and heart disease. Children of women who smoke during pregnancy are likely to suffer from respiratory distress, sudden infant death syndrome, low birth weight, and lowered I.Q.

The Word of Mouth program is a designated American Lung Association Best Practice. Its ultimate aim is to reduce teen smoking rates by changing attitudes and behaviors toward smoking (including experimentation and smoking initiation) of schoolchildren aged 9-13. The program uses trained health educators to facilitate four-lessons/year for each of grades 4-8. In addition to teaching the health impacts of tobacco use, age-appropriate lessons help students to build refusal, decision-making, and goal-setting skills, in order to provide the children with the tools they need to resist the media and other blandishments of the tobacco industry.
